This blog holds my collection of menus, recipes, entertaining tips, reflections, regrets, and barely concealed boastings.
It has to be said, I didn’t inherit the love of cooking from my mum, although I fondly remember her throwing dinner parties. From the vantage point of my young eyes they seemed such glamorous, adult affairs. Okay it was the 70’s, and the Australian food scene hadn’t quite come of age but people dressed up for the occasion and the good crockery came out on show.
Yes, dinner parties take work and as the chef/host/maitre d'/sommelier your experience of the night is probably very different to everyone else's. You're always peripheral to the party of people you've gathered together, and your contributions to the conversation have probably already been made, but think of it as a gift to your loved ones. And gifts always require a little sacrifice of some kind.
Dinner parties are about connecting with the people in life we cherish. Creating a special meal is an expression of love.
Bon appetit everyone.
